Kalispera world!

Welcome to the first installment of my blog series, where I’ll be sharing some of my favorite hidden gems in Athens that often fly under the radar of the average tourist. Now, I know some of you might be thinking, “What is she talking about? I’ve been there!”—and if that’s the case, this post might not be for you. Feel free to skip ahead to my next blog, where I’ll reveal something you haven’t heard of. But if you’re curious to discover a side of Athens that most visitors overlook, stick around—you’re in for a treat! ♥

Time to get some insight of how Eleni likes to enjoy her time in Athens while a citizen of Aspropyrgos, a small industrial area close to Athens and Eleusina.

Every week, me and my boyfriend Aris are visiting either the mount Parnitha or Ymmitos (Part 2).

Yeap! that’s right we both love nature exploring, even in same places while the beauty of the green trees (that’s debatable since lots of them have burned due to local fires in Parnitha) in mixture with the hilly Greek scenery makes you want to keep revisiting. Plus, there exists a truly helpful application with the name of ‘’Komoot’’ that displays a great number of paths (not an add, lol). It’s time to dive into those 2 destinations and explore them accordingly, shall we?

Parnitha:

it’s basically the ultimate adventure spot for couples, loners and families who love nature, a little bit of luxury, and a whole lot of fun! My boyfriend and I have been exploring it like it’s our personal playground, and every time we go, we discover something new. Here are the top key points that make Parnitha so special:

  1. The Hiking Trails: Choose Your Own Adventure

Oh, Parnitha—our little slice of hiking heaven! My boyfriend Aris and I are basically the poster couple for “let’s take a million pics and make memories,” but with a twist. We’re more or less the same when it comes to stopping for photos (because, let’s be real, if you didn’t Instagram it, did it even happen?), but our hiking styles are… let’s just say; uniquely complementary.

I’m the kind of hiker who starts slow, like a car on a cold winter morning. The first 10 minutes? I’m basically a sloth, warming up my legs and complaining about how I should’ve stayed in bed. But once I hit my stride, I turn into a hiking machine—steady, fast, and ready to conquer the trail. Aris, on the other hand, is like a rocket at the beginning. He’s all, “Let’s go! The mountain won’t climb itself!” But by the middle or end of the route, he’s the one asking for breaks because he’s literally gasping for air.

It’s become our little routine: I start slow, he starts fast, and somewhere along the way, we meet in the middle. I’ll be cruising along, feeling like a hiking goddess, and suddenly I’ll hear, “Babe, can we stop for a sec? I need to catch my breath.” And of course, I oblige, because a) I love him, and b) it’s the perfect excuse to take more pics and have a niam niam break.

Pro tip_1:

Bring good hiking shoes (obviously),

•hats and sunglasses when there is too much sunlight (basically the whole year, God bless Greece),

•snacks (especially when being a foodie like me), and a

•sense of humor (though climbing a mountain when you in fact hasn’t done it for a while is a joke itself).

Pro tip_2: Avoid hiking during the scorching summer months (July and August, I’m looking at you). Not only is the heat unbearable, but Parnitha is also prone to wildfires during this time. Trust me, sweating through your sunscreen while worrying about a potential wildfire is not the vibe. Stick to spring, autumn, or even winter for cooler temps and safer trails.

Plus, the views are way more Instagrammable when the landscape isn’t, you know, on fire!

Pro tip_3 : Start early in the morning in order to be just in time for lunch when reaching the Mpafi Refuge restaurant (Remember: the time displayed on the app is approximate and varies from the pace, time and snack breaks!).

Fun fact: There’s a trail called Mpafi (yes, it’s as fun to say as it sounds) that’s perfect for beginners.

<- Image on the left!

Important: Take your rubbish with you. The deer aren’t running a cleanup service.

Conclusion: The Mpafi Refuge is a haven for hikers, nature enthusiasts, and anyone who appreciates a stunning view. Here, you’ll find winding trails, lush forests, and a charming little lodge with a cozy restaurant serving up warm drinks, hearty meals, and snacks to refuel after your adventure. The area is also home to wildlife like deer, foxes, and birds—spotting one is a treat, but don’t try to pet them; they’re not exactly fans of selfies or small talk. It’s the perfect escape to swap city chaos for serene mountain vibes and a good meal.

  1. The Casino: Glamour and Freebies

Okay, let’s talk about the Casino Mont Parnes. First of all, it’s fancy. Well not at first glance but appearence can surely be deceiving! Its like, “should I wear heels or sneakers?” fancy. Well, I would suggest either but I must mention that it is a great opportunity to wear that dress that is only for a ‘’special occasion’’.

We got the Silver Card, which is basically our way to indulge in free spins and free drinks. Yes, FREE DRINKS. Nothing says “date night” like sipping a cocktail while pretending we know how to play roulette and observing other people’s bets.

On your first time just approach the registration reception and say that it’s your first time here blah blah and they will guide you through it and hand over this golden ticket (or should I say silver) of free drinks and spins called the silver card !

Pro tip : If you’re not into gambling, just go for the vibe. The views from the casino are insane, especially at night when Athens is all lit up below. Plus, the free drinks make it worth it!

Additional Tips

  • Casino Address: Casino Mont Parnes, Mount Parnitha, 136 75, Greece.
  • Opening Hours: The casino is open daily, but check their official website for specific hours and any entry requirements.
  • Weather: The road to the casino can be winding and occasionally foggy, so drive carefully (In case you decide to go all Fast & Furious, well don’t), especially at night.

3. The Restaurant with the Fireplace and the View

There’s this restaurant up there Flabouri that has a fireplace inside and a terrace with a view that will make you forget how much time you just spend getting there (if you choose the hiking route).

On our first time me and Aris went to discover this gem of view point by choosing the path displayed here and we were so sure of ourselves, too ambitious and let me tell you why. To justify yours truly I must first mention that it was snowy and cold, allow me to provide you with the necessary proof of situation below,

We were in over our heads because:

a) we got at the cable car at around 14:00pm (that is too late obviously),and

b) we had a light breakfast, (which later left us both hungry, cold and tired).

Pro tip_1 : For your own good start early, like 11:00am from the cable car (don’t repeat our failed attempt).

Pro tip_2 : Always keep in mind that the time appearing on the hiking trail is approximate (allow me to higlhight this important aspect once again), it usually takes more than displayed, as we make some stops to recharge. Also, keep in mind that you would have to take the trail to come back and make it before sundown.

~Now, back to the general beauty and flow of my blog~,

We love sitting outside when the weather’s nice—it’s like dining in the clouds. And when it’s chilly, we cozy up by the fireplace and exchange business ideas.

Fun fact_1: Mpafi Refuge has got a fireplace as well; it’s inside the restaurant order area and to the right.

Fun fact_2: The food is actually really good. Like, “I’d come back just for the moussaka” good. And the wine? Let’s just say it makes the hike back down much more entertaining.

Final Thoughts

Parnitha is our go-to spot for adventure, relaxation, and a little bit of luxury. Whether we’re hiking, gambling, or just enjoying a meal with a view, it always feels like a mini getaway.  So, if you’re looking for a place to mix romance, adventure, and a little bit of glamour, Parnitha is it.

Stay tuned for the part 2!

Yours truly,

Eleni ♥
